Hire Social Media Managers
Six things to get right when you hire a social media manager offshore
The role has split into three different jobs, and hiring the wrong one is the most common mistake here.
01
Decide which of three jobs you mean
Strategist, creator or community manager. They are different people, and job adverts that ask for all three get you none of them well.
02
Hire for judgment, not follower counts
Someone who grew their own account grew one brand in one voice. Ask how they would handle yours, and what they would stop doing.
03
Get a live rate, not a published one
Pay for this role moves with demand and with the platform mix. A band you read online, including ours, dates within a quarter.
04
Check the timezone maths honestly
Social is a same-day function. Work out the overlap you actually need before you decide where to hire.
05
Test on your own brand
A short paid exercise on your real account and real constraints tells you more than any portfolio of someone else’s numbers.
06
Budget all-in, not gross
BPJS, THR and PPh 21 administration sit on top of salary. The gross figure is not what leaves your account.
Hire a Social Media Manager in Indonesia in 2026
By the MixWork Team - Last updated 24 August 2026
Key takeaways
• You can hire a full-time social media manager in Indonesia on a compliant permanent contract without setting up a local entity. An Employer of Record is the mechanism.
• The role has split into strategist, creator and community manager. Decide which one you are hiring before you write the advert.
• Follower counts on a personal account predict very little. Judgment on an unfamiliar brand predicts almost everything.
• Pay for this role reprices with demand and platform mix, so we quote current figures on a call rather than publishing bands that date within a quarter.
You can hire a full-time social media manager in Indonesia on a compliant permanent contract without a local entity, through an Employer of Record. That is the whole answer. The harder question is which version of the role you actually need, because social media manager now describes three different jobs, and hiring the wrong one is the most common failure in this function.
Social media manager now describes three different jobs
This is the decision that matters, and it is usually skipped. Job adverts that ask for one person to do all three of these get a generalist who does none of them well, which is then read as a hiring failure rather than a specification failure.
| Strategist | Creator | Community manager | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Owns | Channel mix, calendar, positioning, reporting against commercial goals | Producing the actual posts, video, copy and edits | Replies, DMs, comments, escalation, sentiment |
| Judged on | Whether the channel contributes to pipeline or retention | Output volume and quality | Response time and how a bad thread ends |
| Fails when | Given no budget or no authority over the calendar | Asked to also set strategy | Left without an escalation path |
| Timezone sensitivity | Low; works asynchronously | Low to moderate | High; this is a same-day function |
Most companies hiring their first offshore social person actually need the strategist-plus-creator combination, and can leave community management with an existing support team. Companies with an engaged audience and a complaint volume need the community manager first and are often surprised by that.
What moves the price of the role
Salary is what the person earns. All-in is what leaves your account once statutory employer costs and the service fee are counted.
Why there are no salary bands on this page. Pay for this role moves with demand and with the platform mix a candidate can actually operate, and it has been moving quickly. A band printed here would mislead you within months. Book a free consultation and we will give you a current figure for the version of the role you need.
What actually moves it:
- Whether they can tie the channel to a commercial number. The gap between someone who reports reach and someone who reports contribution to pipeline or retention is the widest price gap in this function, and the most worthwhile.
- Paid as well as organic. Someone who can brief and read a paid campaign, not just post, prices above someone who cannot.
- Where the experience was earned. Time inside a multinational or an established agency prices above the same years running a small local account, because the review, approval and brand-safety discipline is different.
- Video. Whoever can actually produce and edit short-form video in-house removes a bottleneck that otherwise sits with an agency, and is priced accordingly.
Why follower counts are a bad screen
The most common mistake in hiring this role is treating a candidate's own audience as evidence. It is weak evidence for three reasons. Growing one account in one voice on one platform, usually over years and often on a topic they personally care about, is not the same skill as running an unfamiliar brand under someone else's approval process. Follower counts are also the easiest metric in the function to buy. And the person who grew a personal following often has the least experience of the thing that actually breaks offshore social hires, which is working inside a brand-safety and legal review process.
Screen on judgment instead. Give the candidate your account and ask three questions: what would you stop doing, what would you test first, and what would you need from us to do this well. The answers separate operators from posters immediately.
What a social media manager at three to four years actually owns
| Band | Owns | Still needs |
|---|---|---|
| One to two years | Scheduling, publishing, first-line replies, reporting basic metrics | The calendar set for them, and copy reviewed |
| Three to four years | Owning the calendar, writing and shipping without review, briefing creative, reading performance and changing the plan, handling a bad thread without escalating it | Budget authority, and a steer on positioning |
| Five years and up | Setting channel strategy against commercial goals, owning paid and organic together, managing others | Enough budget to be worth the money |
Three to four years is the band that suits most companies making their first offshore social hire. The person can be trusted to publish without a reviewer, which is the whole point of the hire, but does not yet need the budget and scope a senior would expect.
Timezone, honestly
Social is the one marketing function where the timezone question is real rather than theoretical, because a complaint at 9am in your market is a problem at 9am in your market. Jakarta is UTC+7. That gives a full working-day overlap across Asia-Pacific, a workable afternoon overlap with Europe and the Gulf, and a genuinely awkward overlap with the Americas.
If your audience is in the Americas and you need same-hour community management, be honest that Indonesia is a compromise for that specific sub-function, and consider keeping first-line replies elsewhere while the strategy and content sit in Jakarta. Southeast Asia timezone coverage has the working-hours maths against your own offset, and follow-the-sun coverage covers how teams split a day across regions.
Who you are actually hiring
Indonesia is an unusually strong market for this role, and the reason is scale: it is Southeast Asia's largest consumer economy with very high social platform usage, so Jakarta has a deep bench of people who have run brand accounts at real volume for businesses that operate across the region.
MixWork recruits from the multinational and agency-experienced pool only. The typical placement:
- Average six years' professional experience, typically in their late twenties
- Educated at one of Indonesia's top 10 universities, which on QS World University Rankings 2026 includes Universitas Indonesia (189th globally), Universitas Gadjah Mada (224th) and Institut Teknologi Bandung (255th)
- Multinational or established-agency background
- Twelve-month retention above 90%, against roughly 28% annual voluntary turnover in US professional and business services on Bureau of Labor Statistics JOLTS data
Every MixWork placement works with AI tools daily as standard, which in this function means drafting, variant testing and editing at a volume that used to need an agency. Microsoft's Work Trend Index 2026, published 30 June 2026, found 33% of Indonesian workers qualify as advanced AI users against 16% globally, and that 93% treat AI output as a starting point rather than a final answer against 86% globally.
On English: proficiency among Jakarta's professional class is very high, and near-native among the professionals we place. For this role that matters more than most, because the output is public and unreviewed. The people we place write to clients and present to stakeholders without an intermediary, and nobody checks their copy before it goes out.
One honest limit. If your brand voice depends on native-speaker idiom in a specific market, test for it directly in the paid exercise rather than assuming it. Fluent is not the same as native, and for public-facing copy the difference occasionally shows.
How the hire runs
Calibration first. Which of the three jobs, which platforms, whose approval the work needs, and what number the channel is judged on. Getting this wrong is the main cause of a failed hire in this function. Talent Sourcing starts at 10% of first-year salary.
Then a paid exercise on your own brand. A fortnight of calendar, two or three finished posts, and a written note on what they would stop doing and why. Paid, scoped and deadlined. You learn whether they can write in your voice, whether they read the brief, and whether they push back usefully.
Employment. Bahasa Indonesia PKWTT permanent contracts, BPJS registration at the correct risk class, THR, PPh 21 and payroll, from USD 249 per employee per month with Total Care 360 included.
Contracts and employer costs
Ongoing social media work does not finish, so it belongs on a PKWTT permanent contract rather than a fixed-term PKWT. Using fixed-term contracts to sidestep permanent-employment obligations on continuing work is a misclassification exposure. The PKWT vs PKWTT guide covers the distinction.
| Component | 2026 employer rate |
|---|---|
| BPJS Kesehatan (health) | 4% of wage, capped at Rp 12,000,000 per month |
| BPJS Ketenagakerjaan — JHT, JP, JKK and JKM combined | Roughly 6.24% to 7.74%, JKK varying by industry risk class |
| Total BPJS employer burden | Roughly 10.24% to 11.74% of wage, subject to ceilings |
| THR (religious holiday allowance) | One month's wages at twelve months' service, annually |
| PPh 21 | Employee income tax, administered by the employer |
| MixWork EOR | From USD 249 per employee per month, Total Care 360 included |

When we are the wrong partner
- You want a freelancer or a contractor. MixWork provides full-time permanent employment only, with no contractor, freelancer or contractor-of-record services.
- You need same-hour community management for an American audience. Indonesia is a compromise for that specific sub-function; be honest about it in your plan.
- You want an agency to own the whole channel. A dedicated hire reports to you and needs someone to set direction.
