If you sell into Southeast Asia from the US or Europe, your customers raise issues while your entire company is asleep. There is no shift pattern in New York or London that fixes it. There is a location that does.
The problem you notice about six months in
Companies rarely plan for this. It arrives on its own.
You sell into Southeast Asia. Maybe it started with one enterprise customer in Singapore, or a distributor in Malaysia, or your product found unexpected traction in Indonesia. Revenue grows, the account list gets longer, and then the pattern shows up in your support metrics: a whole category of tickets that sit for twelve hours before anyone touches them.
Not because anyone is slow. Because when a customer in Jakarta or Manila hits a problem at 2pm their time, it is the middle of the night everywhere your company exists.
You cannot hire your way out of this in your own country. There is no shift pattern in New York or London that covers Southeast Asian business hours without asking someone to work through the night indefinitely. And the moment you try, you meet the retention problem that ends most night shift experiments inside a year.
Why Jakarta solves it and other locations do not
Jakarta runs on Western Indonesia Time, UTC+7, and Indonesia does not observe daylight saving. Its position relative to the rest of the region is unusually convenient:
Bangkok, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh, Vientiane: same hour
Yangon: 30 minutes behind
Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Brunei: 1 hour ahead
Hong Kong, Taipei, Perth: 1 hour ahead
Tokyo, Seoul: 2 hours ahead
Sydney and Melbourne: 3 to 4 hours ahead depending on Australian daylight saving
A team working an ordinary Jakarta day of 9am to 6pm is live for the whole business day in every major Southeast Asian market. Singapore and Manila see 10am to 7pm. Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City see exactly the same hours. Nobody is on a night shift and nobody is stretching.
Compare the alternatives honestly. A US based team is 11 to 15 hours away from the region. A Latin American nearshore team, which is the option most US companies weigh against Asia, sits 12 to 14 hours from Singapore and cannot serve those hours at all without night working. This is not a marginal preference between two workable options. For regional coverage there is really only one answer.
The part that surprises people: it covers your night too
Here is the thing that makes this decision easier than it looks. The same team, working the same ordinary hours, also covers your overnight.
A Jakarta workday of 9am to 6pm falls between 10pm and 7am US Eastern, and between 4am and 1pm in London. So a team hired to serve your Asian customers during their business hours is, at no additional cost and with no schedule change, also working through the American night and the European early morning.
You are not choosing between regional coverage and overnight coverage. You get both from the same nine hours.
Why the talent pool suits regional work specifically
Coverage is the structural argument. This is the practical one.
Indonesia is Southeast Asia’s largest economy and its largest e-commerce market. Jakarta is the region’s second largest city and the centre of its most developed financial services and e-commerce sector. That has produced professionals who understand regional commerce from the inside: how the marketplaces work, how buyers behave, how payments and logistics differ market by market, what a customer in Manila expects versus one in Bangkok.
If you are running marketplace operations on Shopee, Lazada or Tokopedia, that is direct operational experience rather than something someone has to learn from your documentation.
The calibre is the part that surprises people, and it is worth being specific about. A conventional seat based operation staffs for cost per seat and trains to a script. We recruit the way a corporate employer does. The professionals we place hold degrees from Indonesia's top universities. Under the QS World University Rankings 2026 that means institutions like Universitas Indonesia at 189 globally, Universitas Gadjah Mada at 224 and Institut Teknologi Bandung at 255, with 26 Indonesian universities ranked overall. They average six years of professional experience, are typically in their late twenties, and come from multinational or established corporate backgrounds. We place individual contributors, team leads and managers, so a regional function can be staffed all the way up rather than only at the execution layer.
English proficiency across Jakarta’s professional class is very high, and near native among the people we place. They correspond with your customers, present to your stakeholders and run their own meetings without anyone checking their work first. For accounts that carry real revenue, that is the bar you need.
What this kind of team usually does
Customer support for Asian customers, in their business hours, across ticketing, chat and email
Account management and customer success for regional accounts, including scheduled calls that no longer require someone in California to wake at 4am
Marketplace and channel operations: listings, pricing, merchandising, seller queries, order exceptions and returns
Partner and distributor coordination across regional markets
Regional operations: logistics coordination, local vendor management, market research
Localisation and regional marketing execution
Agencies and managed service providers with Asian end clients tend to reach this conclusion faster than product companies, because the coverage gap shows up immediately in their own service commitments.
The model matters
Coverage is only half of it. The other half is who these people actually are to your customers.
MixWork places permanent, full time employees on compliant Indonesian contracts who work under your direction, in your tools, using your email domain, representing your brand. They are your hires. Your customers in Singapore are not talking to a vendor’s agent working three accounts. They are talking to someone from your company who happens to be in Jakarta.
That distinction shows up in the work. Regional account handling requires knowing your product, your customers and your history with them, and none of that survives high turnover. Twelve-month retention across MixWork placements runs above 90%, supported by Total Care 360, included with the employer of record at no extra cost: a named HR manager backed by a full HR team, monthly check in calls with your team member and separately with you, engagement and dispute resolution, performance and attendance monitoring, and regular professional learning sessions.
You do not need a company in Indonesia for any of this. We employ the team compliantly and handle payroll, BPJS, PPh 21 and THR; you manage the work.
What it costs
Employer of Record, payroll and HR from USD 249 per employee per month
Talent sourcing from 10% of first year salary, charged on success
Dedicated managed workspace in Jakarta’s SCBD district from USD 199 per workspace per month
MixWork Managed IT from USD 99 per device per month, no deposit, nothing upfront
Flex Benefits from USD 29 per employee per month
Salary sits on top and depends on the role. Worth framing the comparison properly: the number to beat is not what an equivalent hire costs at home. It is what the coverage gap currently costs you in response times, churn among regional accounts, and deals that stall because nobody could get on a call at a workable hour.
What we do not do
We employ full time permanent staff only, with no contractors or freelancers, so we cannot flex a team up for a regional launch and down afterwards. And we are not a high volume consumer voice operation. Our strength is experienced professionals handling written, technical and relationship work.
It is also a different arrangement from a contractor, freelancer or virtual assistant. Those give you someone splitting attention across several clients, with no continuity when they move on. Ours are permanent employees dedicated to your business, which is what produces twelve-month retention above 90%.
