Hire Architectural Designers & Technical Drafters

How to hire architectural drafters, BIM modellers and technicians in Indonesia: standards transfer, testing, licensing limits and permanent employment.

Six things to know before you hire an architectural drafter in Indonesia

Where offshore drafting and BIM hires go right, where they go wrong, and the line your licensed architect never hands over.

01

Standards decide the outcome, not talent

A capable drafter without your templates, layers and detail library produces clean drawings that are wrong for your office. Transfer the standards first.

02

Your architect of record keeps the seal

The hire develops, drafts and models under your licensed architect or engineer, who reviews, takes responsibility for and seals every drawing in your jurisdiction.

03

Name the role precisely

Designer, drafter, BIM modeller and documentation technician are four different jobs. A brief that blurs them attracts candidates who are strong at the wrong one.

04

Test on one of your sheets

A paid redline exercise on a sanitised sheet from your own office shows how a candidate reads markups and whether they ask before guessing.

05

Keep files and licences on your side

Put software seats on your own account and project files in your own environment. Offboarding is then a matter of revoking access.

06

Plan the overnight handover

Jakarta runs on UTC+7 with no daylight saving. For teams in the Americas, markups sent at your close come back revised by morning.

Hire Architectural Designers & Technical Drafters in Indonesia

Key takeaways

  • You can hire full-time architectural designers, drafters and BIM modellers in Indonesia on a permanent contract through an Employer of Record, without setting up a local entity.

  • They work as design-development, drafting, BIM and documentation capacity under your own licensed architect or engineer of record, who reviews, takes responsibility for and seals the drawings. The Indonesian hire does not stamp or sign off your projects.

  • Offshore drafting succeeds or fails on standards. Spend the first month transferring your CAD and BIM standards, templates, detail library and markup loop before you judge output.

  • Pay for these roles reprices faster than published surveys can follow, so MixWork quotes a current figure for the seniority and software you need on a call.

Yes. You can hire a full-time architectural designer, technical drafter or BIM modeller in Indonesia on a compliant permanent contract, without an Indonesian entity, by employing them through an Employer of Record. They work only for you, inside your drawing environment, as design-development, drafting, BIM and documentation capacity under the direction of your own licensed architect or engineer of record, who reviews the work, takes professional responsibility for it and seals it in your jurisdiction.

Where these hires disappoint, the cause is almost always standards rather than talent. Your CAD and BIM standards, templates, layer conventions, detail library and markup loop either exist in a form an outsider can learn, or they live in the heads of two senior people.

Why offshore drafting succeeds or fails on standards

An offshore drafter can only be as consistent as the standards you hand over. Plenty of candidates draw well in AutoCAD and model well in Revit or ArchiCAD; none arrives knowing your office’s way of doing it.

Every practice has conventions it has stopped noticing: which layer a demolition line sits on, how door tags are numbered, which detail in the library was quietly retired after a problem on site, how a revision cloud is closed out. A drafter who does not know these produces drawings that are plausible but wrong for you. Your senior staff then spend longer correcting sheets than drawing them would have taken, which is the usual story behind a firm deciding offshore drafting does not work.

Before the first day, collect what exists and write down what does not:

  • CAD standards: layer naming, line weights and pen tables, text and dimension styles, plot settings.

  • BIM standards: your Revit or ArchiCAD templates, family or object libraries, view templates, naming conventions, worksharing rules, and the level of development you expect at each stage.

  • Sheets and revisions: title blocks, sheet numbering, and the revision procedure from cloud to issue.

  • The detail library, with superseded details removed or clearly marked.

  • The QA and markup loop: who marks up, in which tool, what each colour means, how a markup is closed, and what your checker signs off before anything leaves the office.

Spend the first month transferring standards

Call the first four weeks a transfer period, so nobody judges the hire on week-two productivity.

  1. In week one, set up access and software and hand over the standards pack. The hire redraws a completed sheet from a past project to match the issued version, then lists every difference.

  2. In week two, give a real but low-risk task, such as taking a drawing set to its next revision, with every sheet marked up by your checker.

  3. In week three, move to a live project, with markups returned in one batch and a short call about the patterns behind them.

  4. In week four, the hire writes down every convention they had to ask about. That document is the missing page of your standards, and the next hire starts from it.

By the end of the month the same correction should be appearing less often. When one markup keeps coming back, the cause is usually a rule nobody wrote down, and the fix is to write it.

Architectural designer, drafter, BIM modeller or documentation technician

Decide which of four jobs you are hiring before you write the brief, because the strongest candidate for one is often average at the next.

Role

Main output

Core tools

Hire this when

Architectural designer

Design development from your architect’s concept: options, plans, elevations, presentation drawings

SketchUp, Revit or ArchiCAD, rendering software

Your licensed architects are spending their hours developing schemes whose direction they have already set

Technical drafter

Permit and construction drawing sets to your standards, redline pick-up, detail drafting

AutoCAD, Revit or ArchiCAD

Your bottleneck is turning markups into issued sheets

BIM modeller or coordinator

The model itself: families, views, sheets generated from the model, clash detection and coordination with consultants’ models

Revit or ArchiCAD, Navisworks or a similar coordination tool, your common data environment

You deliver in BIM and the model lags the drawings, or consultant models are not being coordinated

Documentation technician

Schedules, drawing registers, transmittals, specification support, as-built and record drawings

AutoCAD or Revit, document control systems, spreadsheets

Issued information is late or inconsistent even though the drawings themselves are sound

At three to six years, a good drafter or BIM modeller runs a sheet set to your standards with a checker reviewing, asks in writing before guessing, and keeps a model clean enough for someone else to pick up. Design intent and anything going out under seal stay with your architect.

If you need marketing visuals rather than drawing production, hiring a graphic designer in Indonesia is the closer fit. If you need one drawing set for one project, a freelancer or drafting bureau is the better buy: MixWork provides full-time permanent employment only. A dedicated hire pays off when the work is continuous and your standards are worth teaching once.

Your licensed architect or engineer of record keeps the seal

An Indonesian designer, drafter or BIM modeller hired through MixWork works under the direction of your own licensed architect or engineer of record, who reviews the drawings, takes professional responsibility for them and seals or signs them in your jurisdiction. The hire does not stamp, seal or sign off your drawings, and does not practise as a registered architect on your projects.

Architecture is a regulated profession in many markets, and who may seal a drawing is decided by the rules where the project is built. In the UK, for example, the title “architect” is protected under section 20 of the Architects Act 1997. In the US, each state sets its own rules for practising architecture. Indonesia regulates the profession as well, under Law No. 6 of 2017 on Architects, which has since been amended by the Job Creation legislation. We do not summarise its requirements here. Where a question turns on registered practice, whether in the country your project is in or in Indonesia, confirm it with counsel in both jurisdictions before you rely on an answer.

In practice this shapes four decisions:

  • Job titles. Use titles such as architectural designer, technical drafter or BIM modeller in the contract and anything your clients see, and check with counsel before using the word architect.

  • Review and sign-off. Every sheet the hire produces passes through your checker and your architect or engineer of record before it is issued. Allow time for it in the QA loop.

  • Client and authority contact. Keep correspondence with your clients, consultants and permitting authorities with your licensed staff unless counsel has confirmed the arrangement you want.

  • Candidates who hold registration. Some candidates hold professional registration in Indonesia. Treat it as evidence of experience, never as authority to seal or sign drawings for your projects.

What to test when you hire an offshore drafter or BIM modeller

Test on your own material. A portfolio shows finished sheets and hides how long they took and how many rounds of markups they needed.

Test

What it involves

What it tells you

Paid redline exercise

One of your sheets, sanitised or from a completed project, with a set of markups. The candidate picks them up to your standards within a fixed time, and is paid for it.

Whether they read markups accurately, follow conventions they were handed an hour ago, and ask before guessing

Revit or ArchiCAD model review

The candidate shares a model they built and walks your BIM lead through how views, families and worksets are organised

Whether the model is built for someone else to use, or only built to plot

Standards check

Show your layer or naming standard, then ask them to find what breaks it in a sample file

Attention to detail, and whether they treat a standard as a rule or a suggestion

Written RFI

Give them an ambiguous detail and ask for the question they would send your architect

Clear written English, and whether they flag uncertainty instead of resolving it alone

Keep the redline exercise short, a few hours of work, and pay for it. Use a sheet you are comfortable sharing under a confidentiality agreement, and never material from a live project whose client has not agreed to it.

Units, codes and local knowledge stay with your team

Your building codes, planning rules and local standards remain your responsibility and your licensed team’s; the hire applies them as you instruct.

Indonesian projects are drawn in metric. Candidates who have worked for foreign offices may be comfortable in imperial, but test it if your projects are in feet and inches: dimension styles and fractional rounding catch out occasional users.

Codes are a different matter. A drafter in Jakarta will not know your fire separation rules, accessibility requirements or energy code, and should not be expected to work them out. What works is a project checklist written by your team, listing what must appear on each sheet type. The drafter applies it and your licensed reviewer checks compliance.

File security and software licences

Keep software seats and project files on your side, and put the hire on a managed device, so access can be withdrawn cleanly on the day someone leaves.

Drawings carry your clients’ confidential information. The safe default is for the hire to work inside your environment, whether a common data environment, file server or cloud workspace, under their own named login, with no local copies and no personal cloud storage.

Software licences should either sit on your own account, assigned to the hire as a named user so you can reassign the seat when they leave, or be arranged with the device through MixWork Managed IT; we agree which during scoping. Before assigning a seat from your own account, check your vendor agreement on who may use it and from which country, because terms differ by vendor. Managed IT supplies devices and support from USD 99 per device per month, held in-region. Specify a workstation that can run your models: a machine chosen for email will struggle with a large federated Revit model.

Offboarding is then short: revoke the login and the seat, and recover or wipe the device. See remote device security and MDM for the device side.

Timezone handover for overnight drawing production

Jakarta runs on Western Indonesian Time, UTC+7 all year with no daylight saving, so a remote drafter there can turn markups around while a team in the Americas sleeps, share the morning with Europe and overlap much of the Asia-Pacific working day.

Overnight production only works if the handover is written down, because nobody on your side will be awake to answer a question:

  • A daily cut-off: markups received before a fixed time on your side are worked overnight. Anything later rolls to the next day.

  • A handover note in both directions, covering what was done, what is blocked and what needs an answer.

  • A rule for ambiguity: the drafter flags it in the handover note and moves to the next sheet instead of guessing.

  • One live slot a week, even if it is early or late for someone, to talk through recurring markups by voice.

Because Jakarta never changes its clocks, your overlap moves by an hour whenever yours do. Southeast Asia timezone coverage works through the hours against your own offset, and follow-the-sun coverage covers splitting a production day across regions.

What moves the price of an Indonesian drafter or BIM modeller

Software depth, project complexity and experience working to a foreign office’s standards move the price far more than the job title does.

Why this page has no salary figures. Pay for drafters and BIM specialists in Indonesia reprices faster than any published survey can follow, so a band printed here would mislead you within months. Book a free consultation and we will quote a current figure for the seniority and software you need.

  • Software depth. Producing sheets in Revit is common. Building families, managing worksharing and running clash coordination is scarcer, and priced accordingly.

  • Project complexity. Experience on hospitals, laboratories or high-rise mixed use, where coordination is dense, prices above the same years on small residential work.

  • Work for foreign offices. Someone who has drawn to another firm’s standards, in imperial units or to a foreign authority’s submission format, needs less transfer time.

  • Where the experience was earned. Years inside a multinational design or engineering firm usually price above the same years at a small local practice, because the QA discipline is different.

Who you are hiring

MixWork recruits from the multinational and global-agency pool. More than 80% of the people MixWork places come from multinational or global-agency backgrounds, and twelve-month retention across MixWork placements runs above 90%, measured on our own placement data.

Retention matters in drafting because the standards transfer is an investment, and a hire who leaves in month seven takes it with them. Total Care 360 supports retention and comes with the EOR at no extra cost.

Every MixWork placement works with AI tools daily as standard. Microsoft’s Work Trend Index 2026, published 30 June 2026, found that 33% of Indonesian workers are advanced AI users against 16% globally, and that 93% of Indonesian AI users treat AI output as a starting point rather than a final answer, against 86% globally.

English among Jakarta’s professional class is very high, and near-native among the professionals we place. In this role it shows in the paperwork: they write RFIs to your architects, join design reviews and put their questions to your team without an intermediary.

Contracts and employer costs

Continuing drafting and BIM work belongs on a permanent contract, and MixWork employs these hires on PKWTT, the permanent form of Indonesian employment contract; PKWT is the fixed-term form. The PKWT vs PKWTT guide explains when each applies.

Employer BPJS and THR sit on top of salary; PPh 21 is withheld from it. Rates change, so see what BPJS costs employers, THR in Indonesia and the full breakdown of employer costs, or use the cost calculator for an all-in monthly figure.

How MixWork hires architectural drafters and BIM modellers

MixWork Recruit runs the search, success-based, from 10% of first-year salary. Working on MixWork’s own data and AI tools, our recruiters can deliver a first shortlist in as little as 24 hours for mid-level roles. Recruitment typically takes two to three weeks from brief to an accepted offer; if the candidate is employed, their 30-day resignation notice comes on top and sets the real start date.

We run application review, AI screening, recruiter screening, the pre-screen and HR interviews, and a live skills assessment for the role. You join for the main interview and the alignment interview, and the main interview is the natural place for the redline exercise on one of your sheets.

MixWork EOR then employs the hire on a compliant Indonesian contract from USD 249 per employee per month, running payroll, PPh 21, BPJS and THR. Activation and onboarding can take as little as 24 hours once you have chosen your candidate. MixWork Total Care 360 is included: a named HR manager backed by a full HR team, monthly check-in calls with the employee and separately with you, engagement and dispute resolution, and performance and attendance monitoring.

MixWork Spaces adds a dedicated workspace in Jakarta, run by MixWork itself, from USD 199 per workspace per month, useful when clients want drawings worked on from an office rather than a home, and MixWork Managed IT supplies the device from USD 99 per device per month, priced to the specification you need.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. An Employer of Record employs the hire in Indonesia on a compliant PKWTT permanent contract on your behalf and runs payroll, PPh 21, BPJS and THR, while the person works only for you inside your drawing environment. MixWork EOR starts from USD 249 per employee per month. MixWork provides full-time permanent employment only, so if you need a single drawing set for one project, a freelancer or drafting bureau is the better fit.
No. The hire works as design-development, drafting, BIM and documentation capacity under your own licensed architect or engineer of record, who reviews the drawings, takes professional responsibility for them and seals them in your jurisdiction. Architecture is regulated in Indonesia under Law No. 6 of 2017 on Architects, as amended, and in your own jurisdiction under its own rules. Confirm any registered-practice question, including job titles, with counsel in both jurisdictions.
An architectural designer develops your architect’s concept into options, plans and presentation drawings. A technical drafter turns markups into permit and construction sets to your standards. A BIM modeller builds and maintains the model itself, including families, views and clash coordination with consultants. A documentation technician handles schedules, registers, transmittals and record drawings. They are different jobs, and the strongest candidate for one is often average at the next.
Use your own material. A short paid redline exercise on a sanitised sheet from your office shows whether the candidate reads markups accurately, follows conventions they have just been given and asks before guessing. For BIM hires, add a review of a Revit or ArchiCAD model they built, with your BIM lead asking how views, families and worksets are organised. A written RFI on an ambiguous detail tests their English and judgement.
Plan on the first month being a standards transfer rather than full output. Hand over your CAD and BIM standards, templates, layer conventions, detail library and markup procedure, then have the hire redraw a completed sheet, take a set through a low-risk revision and work a live project with batched markups. By week four the repeated corrections should be falling. If one keeps recurring, there is usually an unwritten rule to document.
You should. Licences either sit on your own account, assigned to the hire as a named user so you can reassign the seat, which keeps the licence with your firm if the hire moves on. MixWork Managed IT supplies the device itself, from USD 99 per device per month. Check your vendor agreement on who may use a seat and from where. Project files stay in your own environment under a named login, with no local copies, so offboarding means revoking access.
Jakarta runs on UTC+7 all year with no daylight saving. For a team in the Americas, the Jakarta working day falls largely inside your night, so markups sent at your close can come back revised by your morning. Europe shares its morning with Jakarta, and much of the Asia-Pacific day overlaps. Make it work with a daily markup cut-off, a written handover note each way and one live call a week.
Because pay for these roles in Indonesia reprices faster than any published survey can follow, so a printed band would mislead you within months. What moves the price is software depth such as family building and clash coordination, the complexity of past projects, experience working to a foreign office’s standards or imperial units, written English, and where the experience was earned. We quote a current figure on a call.
