Building an AI-Ready Engineering Team at Speed

The relationship

When an early-stage Singapore startup set out to build an AI platform that automates customer operations for small and mid-sized businesses, its founders faced a familiar bind: the product roadmap was ambitious, the runway was finite, and there was no time to run a hiring process from scratch. They came to MixWork for a simpler proposition: the right engineers, sourced and vetted quickly, so the team could keep shipping while someone else ran the search.

The opportunity

The founders knew exactly what they were building; what they lacked was the bandwidth to find the people to build it. The platform called for an uncommon blend of skills: seasoned full-stack development paired with real, hands-on experience wiring up large language model APIs, and that combination is difficult to screen for well when a founding team is already stretched thin. With only a handful of people and a tight runway, a mis-hire would not simply cost a salary. It would cost a hiring cycle the company could not spare.

Our approach

We started where every good hire starts: a working session with the founders to turn the product roadmap into two precise engineering profiles. Together we drew a clear line between what was non-negotiable, namely full-stack depth and LLM integration experience, and what a strong engineer could reasonably pick up on the job. We then set 30-, 60- and 90-day milestones tied directly to the startup’s own delivery goals, so success would be measured rather than assumed. Because the roles sat squarely in AI-assisted territory, we built a bespoke work-sample assessment that tested engineering judgement instead of an ability to prompt a tool, and paired it with a structured behavioural interview to gauge how each candidate would fare inside a small, self-directed team.

The solution

From a wide field of applicants, MixWork surfaced engineers with demonstrable full-stack track records and genuine exposure to AI model connectors and API architecture, then narrowed the shortlist to those whose instincts matched the founders’ fast, low-oversight way of working. The founders led the final round themselves and confirmed the fit. Both engineers were engaged through MixWork’s Employer of Record arrangement, which gave the company compliant offshore employment and payroll immediately, with no local entity to establish and no administrative detour along the way.

The workspace

The engineers work from a secure, dedicated MixWork facility equipped with high-speed connectivity, business-grade firewalls, attendance monitoring, and private rooms for founder calls and pairing sessions. Beyond the desk setup, they take part in MixWork’s ongoing learning workshops, AI upskilling sessions, and team events, the kind of environment that keeps skills current and people invested, rather than simply present.

Ongoing support

Placement was the beginning of the relationship, not the end of it. MixWork manages the team’s engagement through bi-monthly check-ins, structured performance reviews, and a two-way feedback loop that keeps engineers and founders reading from the same page. Competitive benefits and role-based perks underpin retention, and every piece of equipment is provisioned and maintained by MixWork end to end, with leased laptops secured with mobile device management and kept current with the development and AI tooling the work demands.
