A Right-Sized E-Commerce Rebuild for Retail

SME Retail & E-Commerce

The relationship

A growing small-to-mid-sized home goods retailer was watching more of its business move online, and its Shopify storefront was struggling to keep pace. The company engaged MixWork to modernise both the platform and its customer-facing design, giving its digital storefront the polish its brand already carried in the physical world.

The opportunity

The existing site ran on an ageing theme that quietly capped checkout conversion and made for an awkward experience on mobile, where a growing share of customers now shopped. The business had the ambition to fix it but not the in-house technical resources to plan or deliver a rebuild. As an SME, it needed experienced e-commerce developers and designers matched to its exact platform and budget, without taking on the cost and commitment of a full permanent tech team.

Our approach

MixWork worked closely with the founder to map the storefront’s shortcomings against the company’s growth goals and budget, then defined the precise Shopify and UI/UX skill sets the rebuild called for. Rather than proposing a standing department, we shaped a right-sized, flexible engagement scaled to the work at hand. We set clear delivery KPIs for the project and screened every candidate through a custom, portfolio-backed assessment built to hold up regardless of AI tooling, alongside a behavioural review to confirm each specialist would work well with a lean, founder-led team.

The solution

MixWork sourced Shopify developers and UI/UX specialists with three or more years of relevant experience, chosen for their fit with the storefront’s requirements, the brand’s aesthetic, and the founder’s hands-on, collaborative style. MixWork then took care of engagement contracts and HR administration for the placed specialists, giving the company access to seasoned talent without the compliance burden that comes with hiring locally.

The workspace

The specialists work from a secure, dedicated MixWork facility with high-speed connectivity, business-grade firewalls, attendance monitoring, private rooms for design reviews with the founder, and full business-grade amenities. They also take part in MixWork’s regular learning workshops, AI sessions, and team events.

Ongoing support

Throughout the engagement, MixWork kept the relationship close through bi-monthly check-ins, performance tracking, and steady feedback between the specialists and the founder. Tailored benefits and perks support retention and productivity, and MixWork handles full IT provisioning, with leased, MDM-managed laptops loaded with the current design, development, and AI tooling the team depends on.
